Presidential candidate, CPTPP on agenda of top legislators' gathering
The ongoing session of the National Assembly (NA) is the final preparation for the upcoming NA plenum, which is set to start on October 22.
Vietnam's state presidential candidate and the approval of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) are among topics to be discussed at the 28th sitting of the Standing Committee of the 14th National Assembly (NA).
The 28th session, which was kicked off on October 15 morning under the chair of NA's Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan would serve as the final preparation for the upcoming NA plenum on October 22.
In early October, the Central Committee of the of the Communist Party of Vietnam proposed General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong as the sole candidate for the state president position with absolute majority. The candidate will be subject to a vote at the NA plenum.
Another issue to be discussed is the approval of the CPTPP, which would be a major step towards bringing the deal into force.
At least six out of 11 member states must ratify the CPTPP for it to take effect. Mexico, Japan and Singapore have approved the deal, meaning if Vietnam follows suit, only two more approvals will be needed.
The pact will help "draw out the maximum possible latent economic and trade potential" of Vietnam, Phuc was quoted by Japanese outlets as saying in Hanoi on October 6 ahead of a visit to Tokyo for Tuesday's Mekong-Japan Summit.
Additionally, the NA's Standing Committee will also review Vietnam's socio-economic conditions and state budget collection in 2018 and its targets for 2019, as well as the other important issues.
A recent report by the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) stated that all 12 economic targets set by the National Assembly for 2018 could be achieved, eight of which may exceed expectations. Among others, the GDP growth rate for 2018 is on track to reach 6.7%.
A statement on the NA's website, however, did not mention whether NA deputies will take a confidence vote on major posts ratified by the parliament.
