Private resources key to Hanoi's cultural industry development

As Hanoi positions itself to become a regional cultural hub, experts are calling for stronger private-sector engagement and innovative funding models to protect and promote the capital’s vast heritage. From ancient relics to vibrant craft villages, the city’s cultural assets are seen as a foundation for both economic growth and creative industry development.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi needs a special mechanism to attract private investment in cultural heritage preservation, experts said at a July 1 seminar.

Le Hong Ly, Chairman of the Vietnam Folk Arts Association, stressed the importance of engaging the private sector, mobilizing funding, and supporting networks of young creatives to safeguard and promote the city's rich heritage.

He added that fostering individual creativity, expanding international cooperation, and strengthening cultural communication networks are also essential.

"Hanoi, the first locality nationwide with a resolution dedicated to developing the cultural industry, requires more comprehensive and forward-looking policies and should introduce new models of public-private partnerships in the cultural sector," said Ly.

According to Le Thi Trang from the Institute of Culture and Development under the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, Hanoi has four types of heritage related to natural landscapes, culture, architecture, and intangible folk traditions that that "few cities in Vietnam and around the world possess."

In addition, Hanoi has craft villages, folk performances and traditional rituals.

She agreed with Ly from the Vietnam Folk Arts Association that Hanoi needs to encourage private investors and individuals to contribute to the development of the cultural industry.

Trang recommended that Hanoi remain an active and responsible participant in international conferences and forums, particularly those under UNESCO’s Creative Cities programs.

Hanoi is home to 6,400 cultural and historical relics, 1,800 pieces of intangible cultural heritage, 169 national treasures, and 1,350 craft villages.

According to Resolution 09-NQ/TU of the Hanoi Party Committee on the development of the cultural industry until 2045, Hanoi aims to establish around 60 creative spaces, including seven co-working spaces, 42 cultural and artistic hubs, and other creative venues.
