Red Rain breaks box office record for films on the war in Vietnam

The film is the fastest cinematic product to have ever reached the VND100-billion ($3.8 million) revenue milestone.

THE HANOI TIMES — Mua Do (Red Rain)a Vietnamese film depicting the 1972 Battle of Quang Tri Citadel, earned more than VND100 billion (US$3.8 million) in revenue after four days of screening, according to Box Office Vietnam.

With this figure, the film has become the fastest war-in-Vietnam film ever to surpass the VND100-billion revenue milestone at the box office.

The film was first screened on the night of August 21. At the end of August 22, some VND40 billion ($1.5 million) worth of tickets had been sold.

On the weekend, cinemas across the country generated some VND60 billion ($2.3 million) for the film.

The rising revenue of the film was attributed to its telling of the fierce 81-day Battle of Quang Tri Citadel in 1972 during Vietnam's resistance against the US and its puppet government.

The film is also a cinematic product introduced to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2).

It aims to honor Vietnamese heroes whose sacrifices contributed to the liberation, independence, and self-reliance of Vietnam.

After its premiere, Mua Do quickly became a hot search on Google. On Google Trends, Hanoi, as the host of the grand celebrations for the 80th National Day, leads in search interest for the film.

The runner-up on Google Trends is the central coastal province of Quang Tri, the heroic land depicted in the film’s setting.

The northern port city of Haiphong and its neighboring province of Hung Yen, and the central city of Danang are also among the top search sources.

On average, the film is shown in more than 4,000 screenings per day, making it highly accessible to audiences.

Business insiders predict that the revenue of Mua Do may reach VND300 billion ($11.4 million) as the celebration of the 80th National Day in September is approaching, making it among Vietnam’s top six highest-grossing films.

On social media, the cinematic product has garnered high attention from internet users with numerous posts and discussion videos.

In response to detailed content being revealed online, the production team has called on viewers to refrain from sharing spoilers to preserve the cinematic experience.
