Schools closed, online classes organized in Hanoi amidst Typhoon Kajiki

Local schools cited safety as the main reason for class cancellations amidst heavy rains and strong wind caused by Typhoon Kajiki.

THE HANOI TIMES — Heavy rains and severe flooding caused by Typhoon Kajiki on August 26 forced many schools in Hanoi to cancel in-person classes, with students shifting to online learning.

On the morning of August 26, several schools canceled student gatherings ahead of the new school year due to flooding, and rescheduled the event to another day.

The Hanoi University of Science's High School for Gifted Students sent an urgent letter to students and parents, citing flooding and students' safety as the main reasons for class cancellation.

Ly Thai To Primary School, and Nguyen Tat Thanh Secondary and High School also announced class cancellations to ensure safety for students and teachers, while launching online classes to guarantee learning progress for the students.

Universities, vocational schools and private training facilities also called off classes.

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training instructed schools to act flexibly to ensure student safety.

The Ministry of Education and Training earlier urged localities across central and northern Vietnam to protect school facilities, clean the learning areas after the storm, and prepare for the upcoming academic year.

Across Hanoi, students have returned to school since early August to prepare for the new school year, which officially starts on September 5 and ends in late May next year.

In this new school year, Hanoi expects to have more than 2.3 million students with 60,000 freshmen at grades 1, 6 and 9.
