Vietnam suspends 400 flights as safety concerns rise amidst Kajiki storm

About 400 flights to and from central coastal provinces and cities of Vietnam were suspended, canceled and route-changed due to Kajiki storm.

THE HANOI TIMES — More than 400 flights have been canceled, delayed, and redirected in three days due to safety concerns and influence from tropical storm Kajiki, according to the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation.

Storm Kajiki, the fifth to hit Vietnam this year, forced around 220 flights to reroute, cancel, or delay on August 23, with another 170 flights disrupted the following day.

To ensure safety for passengers and aircraft, national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines has canceled all flights connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to airports in Hue, Quang Tri Province, and Thanh Hoa Province.

Budget carrier Vietjet also warned of schedule adjustments in those central coastal provinces and Hue, and nearby airports, urging passengers to check schedules online or via its app.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam also issued an urgent directive requiring Quang Tri and Thanh Hoa provinces to shut down their airports on August 25 to ensure safety.

Kajiki, also known as the fifth tropical storm to hit Vietnam this year, is expected to reach the shores of Quang Tri and Thanh Hoa provinces on August 25 with wind power reaching up to level 13-14 and gusts up to 167 km/h (level 15).

The storm will have a strong impact on central coastal provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri, and the central coastal city of Hue, causing heavy rains and potential landslides and flooding.

(Storm No. 5) impacts central Vietnam, with further disruptions expected across domestic and international routes.
