Vietnam intensifies pandemic aid to Cambodia, Laos

Vietnam, though struggling to fight against the virus at home, has extended its support to the neighboring countries of Laos and Cambodia.

Vietnam has intensified aid for Cambodia and Laos in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic by providing different kinds of support.

Since the start of the outbreak in the two neighboring countries, Vietnam has granted medical supplies including hundreds of thousands of surgical masks, gear, gloves, hand sanitizer, disinfectants, and Realtime PCR testing kits.

In addition, Hanoi has held virtual meetings to share anti-coronavirus experience with Phnom Penh and Vientiane.

On March 26, the government of Vietnam decided to donate medical supplies worth US$100,000 each to both countries.

On the same day, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc held phone talks with his Cambodian and Laotian counterparts Hun Sen and Thongloun Sisoulith.

On April 3 and 4, Vietnam transported medical supplies and money worth more than VND7 billion (US$304,000) each to both countries.

Viettel Military Group, the leading telecom carrier in Vietnam, has been asked to support equipment and network for virtual meetings between Hanoi and Vientiane and across Laos in which Vietnam shares consultation and treatment experience.

On April 7, Vietnam’s Military Region 7 handed over dozens thousands of surgical masks, gear, chemicals, and money to the Royal Cambodian Army.

On April 16, Vietnam’s Military Region 5 in the central province of Ha Tinh provided military supplies worth nearly VND5 billion (US$217,000) to both Cambodian and Laotian armies.

In addition, the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Association and the Vietnam-Laos Friendship Association, the Association of Vietnamese Investors in Cambodia (AVIC) and Vietnam Business Club in Cambodia (VBCC) have donated hundreds thousands of US dollars to the Phnom Penh and Vientiane governments.

Together with the central government, Vietnam’s provinces bordering with Laos and Cambodia have also provided pandemic relief including rice and food to localities in neighboring countries.
