The census results will be used to evaluate the implementation of socio-economic plans.

Vietnam ranks third in Southeast Asia and 15th in the world in population but the growth has slowed compared to the previous period, according to recent preliminary reports on the 2019 population and housing census conducted by the General Statistics Office (GSO), VnExpress reported.

Accordingly, the total population in Vietnam by April 2019 hit 96.2 million including 47.88 million males and 48.32 million females.

After ten years, Vietnam’s population increased by 10 million people, however, the growth rate slightly fell compared to the period before 2019.

The male/female sex ratio averages at 99.1/100 in the whole country, 96.5/100 in urban areas and 100.5/100 in rural areas.

The population density in Vietnam is 290 per km2, higher than that of other regional countries and the world, of which two most densely populated areas are Hanoi with 2,398 per km2 and Ho Chi Minh City with 4,363 per km2.

The Red River Delta is the most populous region with 22.5 million people while Tay Nguyen or the Central Highlands is the least populated with merely 5.8 million.

There are 33 million people living in urban areas and 63.1 million in rural areas. 77.5% of the population aged over 15 years old is married, of which 69% is in marriage, 2% in the divorce status and 6% in widowhood.

Up to 92% of the population in school age is educated at schools and 96% is literate.

There are 26.8 million households, a rise of 4.4 million compared to the figure of 2009 while there are still 4,800 homeless households.

This is the fifth national population census in Vietnam, designed to collect data for research and analysis of population and housing development in the country. The census results will be used to evaluate the implementation of socio-economic plans.
