Vietnam leads UN consensus on peacekeeping budget for Abyei
Vietnam’s dual role in coordination and field operations affirms its growing presence in global peacekeeping.
THE HANOI TIMES — Following nearly two months of discussions in the 5th Committee of the 79th UN General Assembly, Vietnam successfully coordinated negotiations leading to the adoption of a $310 million budget for the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).

This is the second resolution that Vietnam has led to adoption during this session. The resolution reaffirms the core principles of UN peacekeeping financing, acknowledges the financial challenges that peacekeeping missions have faced, and emphasizes the need to provide UNISFA with sufficient resources to fulfill its mandate. Member states are urged to contribute fully and on time.
The approved 2025–2026 budget will support salaries, equipment, medical care, and operations, with Vietnam acting as coordinator during negotiations to bridge differences, facilitate compromise, build consensus, and secure unanimous backing in both the committee and the General Assembly plenary.
In addition to its diplomatic efforts, Vietnam currently deploys nearly 200 military and police officers to the UNISFA mission, representing one of the largest national contributions to this highly sensitive region.
UNISFA operates in conflict-hit Abyei to demilitarize, monitor borders, protect civilians, and support humanitarian efforts, while Vietnam’s active role ensures favorable conditions for peacekeepers and enhances its reputation as a responsible, constructive UN member.
