Vietnam NA Chairperson relieved from duty

Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan is the first chairwoman of Vietnam’s 70-year parliament history.

Vietnam’s National Assembly (NA), the country’s highest legislative body, today [March 30] relieved its chairperson of the 2016-2021 term from her duty.

NA Chairperson Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, 67, the first chairwoman in the country’s 70-year parliament history, fulfilled her functions of making constitutional and legislative decisions, and important issues of the country as well as taking the supreme supervision on all activities of the State in accordance with the Constitution and laws.

Beginning her term in July 2016, Ngan promised to continue improving the quality of the National Assembly’s activities to make the body truly for the sake of the people and the country’s national honor and pride towards the country’s sustainable development.

During the five-year term, she was given high confidence votes in 2013, 2014, and 2018.

Born in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre, Ngan began her political career in the Finance sector. She was elected to the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Central Committee at the age of 47 and became a member of the Politburo, the country’s most powerful body, when turned to 57.

Before elected to the NA Chairperson, she held the post of Minister of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs (MoLISA), Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Secretary of the Hai Duong Party Committee, and Deputy Minister of Finance.
