Vietnam has a new deputy foreign minister

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on April 12 appointed Nguyen Thanh Binh, Director of the Northeast Asia Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the new Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Binh, 49, will serve a five-year term. The ministry has five other deputy ministers.

Binh Duong Province hosts Horasis China Meeting 2024

The southern province of Binh Duong, one of Vietnam's largest industrial hubs, will host the Horasis China Meeting 2024 from 14-16 April, bringing together hundreds of Chinese companies seeking new investment opportunities. At the meeting, authorities and businesses from Binh Duong Province will close deals with Chinese partners to strengthen economic ties.

Binh Duong is Vietnam's FDI magnet, with more than 4,000 operational projects.  

Fresh Vietnamese bananas dominate AEON Topvalue stores in Hong Kong

AEON Topvalue is now selling only fresh Vietnamese bananas in all of its 91 stores in Hong Kong, China, the company's director Yuichiro Shiotani told an international convention on trade and supply chains in Ho Chi Minh City on April 12.

According to the Japanese executive, Vietnamese bananas have replaced those from Taiwan (China), the Philippines and Singapore because they are grown and produced on a sustainable, low-emission production line that meets consumer demand for green growth.

Ho Chi Minh City to hold first health festival

Ho Chi Minh City will celebrate its first health festival on 26-28 April to promote good health practices and enhance the city's image as a top tourist destination in Vietnam. Entitled "Live Well", the festival will feature a wide range of activities in the fields of health, culture, sports, tourism and entertainment.

The local authorities expect at least 10,000 visitors and participants to the festival, to take place in District 10.

Viettel and Singapore partner to build new submarine optical cable

Military-owned telecommunications group Viettel-run telecom group Viettel  has announced that it will cooperate with Singapore Telecommunications Limited (Singtel) to build a new undersea fibre-optic cable linking the two countries. The cable will have two main terminals, one in Vietnam and the other in Singapore, as well as sub-terminals in Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia.

Viettel and Singtel plan to launch the cable in Q2 2027. The cable development is part of the master plan to make Vietnam a digital hub in the region.

Art show to celebrate Dien Bien Phu victory

An art performance to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7) will be held on the night of May 6 in the capital of Dien Bien province. As a national celebration, the show will feature nearly 1,000 artists and participants.

The ceremony is divided into three episodes that highlight the resilience, determination and fighting spirit of the Vietnamese at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, which ended the era of colonization and inspired other nations to fight for their independence.
