Social equality a priority for Vietnam: Ambassador

Vietnam is prioritizing social progress and equality to achieve sustainable development, said Ambassador Mai Phan Dung, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN), the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other international organizations, in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 11.

He told the 112th session of the International Labor Conference that the Vietnamese government will continue to reform the legal framework to strengthen social security and develop a quality labor market.

Cybersecurity seminar to be held later this month

CIO Vietnam, the community of IT engineers and technicians, will hold a cybersecurity seminar on June 27 in Ho Chi Minh City to help businesses improve their ability to defend themselves against digital threats. The seminar will bring together 230 technicians, engineers, executives, and specialists to share their practices and discuss solutions to cybersecurity issues.

In 2023, Vietnam recorded nearly 14,000 cyberattacks targeting local businesses and organizations, up 9.5% inter-annually. In Q1/2024, there were more than 32,200 attacks, up 19% year-on-year.

Nokia, Foxconn team up to meet demand for 5G communications

Finnish technology company Nokia and Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer Foxconn announced a partnership on June 11 to operate a factory in Bac Giang Province to produce transmission equipment for 5G communications.

The plant will be operational in July and production is expected to ramp up in September. The products will be sold in both Vietnamese and international markets. The collaboration is expected to accelerate Vietnam's progress in national digital transformation.

International Sports and Outdoor Exhibition to kick off in September

The Vietnam International Sports and Outdoor Exhibition (VIETNAM SPORTS SHOW 2024) will run from September 26 to 28 at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center, Ho Chi Minh City. The event will bring together more than 350 companies from 12 countries and territories with 450 booths in four industry groups, including sports apparel, outdoor and leisure, health and fitness, and sporting goods and facilities. It expects to welcome more than 15,000 visitors.

Hanoi aims for GRDP growth of at least 6.5% in 2024

Hanoi aims to achieve a gross regional domestic product (GRDP) growth rate of at least 6.5% in 2024, according to the plan to implement the latest resolution of the city's 17th Party Congress. The city also focuses on completing some specific tasks, such as the contribution of the digital economy to GRDP, reaching over 20% in 2024 and 30% in 2025, and the coverage of a safe water network reaching 95% of rural households in 2024 and 100% in 2025.

Chilli export turnover reaches more than US$16 million

The Vietnam Pepper Association reported that chili exports in the first five months of the year reached nearly 6,500 tons, worth US$16 million, up 10% in volume and 36.5% in turnover compared to the same period last year. China ranked first among export markets with nearly 5,800 tons, up 8% year-on-year.

Vietnamese, South Korean firms to cooperate on waste-to-energy projects

BCG Energy (a subsidiary of Bamboo Capital Group), SK Ecoplant (South Korea's SK Group), and SLC (Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corp) signed a cooperation agreement on June 10 to develop waste-to-energy projects and waste management solutions in the southern provinces of Long An and Kien Giang.

The three parties plan to build waste recycling, sorting, and disposal facilities, waste-to-energy plants, and greenhouse gas reduction projects in the southern regions.

Vietnam to cut 11.2 million tons of CO2 emissions by 2045

Vietnam aims to cut emissions by 11.2 million tons of CO2 equivalent by 2045, as per the latest plan signed by the Deputy Prime Minister. This decision aims to effectively manage and phase out ozone-depleting substances and controlled greenhouse gases in line with the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

The plan will include strengthening the management and elimination of controlled substances, and implementing technologies to promote sustainable cooling approaches.
