At a regular press briefing held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, spokeswoman Pham Thu Hang said Vietnam is saddened and shares the loss with the Holy See, the global Catholic community, and the Vietnamese Catholic Church.

"The Vietnamese government highly appreciates Pope Francis' role in advancing relations between Vietnam and the Holy See, as well as his guidance and encouragement to Vietnamese Catholic dignitaries, clergy and faithful to accompany the nation and contribute to the country's development," said Hang.

Pope Francis died on April 21 at the age of 88 after more than 12 years as Supreme Pontiff. He breathed his last in his residence at Saint Martha's House in the Vatican, after suffering a stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure.
