Vietnam Party to review presidential candidates at ongoing plenum
The Central Committee will consider the list of presidential candidates before presenting to the National Assembly for approval at the upcoming semiannual session on October 22.
At the 8th plenum of the 12th Party Central Committee, which kicked off today (October 2), the Politburo will propose candidates for state presidency after President Tran Dai Quang passed away last month, said Vietnam Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
The Central Committee will then consider the list before submitting to the National Assembly for approval at the upcoming semiannual session on October 22.
Trong said the Party plenum, which takes place from October 2 to 6, will also elect new members to the Central Inspection Committee, which is in charge of taking disciplinary actions on corrupt party members, and announce punishment decisions on some high-ranking officials.
Tran Quoc Vuong in March was appointed to be Executive Secretary of the Party's Secretariat and was released from the chair of the Central Inspection Committee in May. He was succeeded by Tran Cam Tu.
Additionally, the plenum will also review socio-economic development and the government's revenue collection this year, and set socio-economic targets for next year.
At a press meeting on September 28, Le Quang Vinh, deputy chief of the Party Central Committee Office, stated that the Committee will thoroughly examine presidential candidates.
This was the first time such a press meeting was held before a Central Committee plenum.
Previously, competent authorities named Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh as Acting President on the basis of Vietnam's constitution and Party's regulations after President Quang's passing, Vinh stated.
Vietnam's Politburo is now comprised of 17, but actually 16 are active as Dinh The Huynh left his positions as Executive Secretary of the Party's Secretariat and Chairman of the Party's Central Theoretical Council in March for long-term medical treatment.
Tran Dai Quang passed away on September 21 at the age of 61 of a "serious illness" while once rising star Dinh La Thang is in jail for wrongdoing while leading state-run energy giant PetroVietnam.
