Vietnamese PM to have busy week at UN Headquarters in New York

Vietnam has been an active affiliate of the United Nations over the past 47 years, serving as a non-permanent member of the organization's Security Council in the 2020-2021 term and as president from July 2008 to October 2009.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh started his high-level week in the US from September 17-23 to attend the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) and conduct bilateral activities.

Alongside his UNGA78 agenda, Prime Minister Chinh will participate in a series of activities to deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which was upgraded last week during President Joe Biden's visit to Vietnam.

The Vietnamese Prime Minister is scheduled to address the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, UN Summits, and high-level meetings on global issues such as climate change and pandemic response.

He will also hold bilateral meetings with the UN Secretary General, the President of the UNGA78, and leaders of some countries and international organizations.

Prime Minister Chinh will meet with the US Vice President, key members of the US Congress, the National Security Advisor, and some US cabinet members. He will visit a number of prestigious US education institutions and the NASDAQ Stock Exchange.

Chinh will attend the US-Vietnam Trade and Investment Promotion Conference and the Ho Chi Minh City - New York City Twinning Ceremony.

The opening of the 78th General Assembly session (UNGA 78) will bring together world leaders in New York under the theme "Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and the sustainability for all."

The first day of the high-level General Debate will be September 19. General Debate is held every September and is usually attended by Heads of State and Government. Member States speak in turn and have the option to respond when necessary. They take advantage of the chance to raise an issue of concern to them.

Vietnam joined the United Nations in 1977. Over the past 47 years, the country has been an active member. Vietnam was elected a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2020-2021. It held the presidency of the Council in July 2008 and October 2009.

Vietnam has also made impressive efforts to support the UN's Peacekeeping Operations with 29 missions in South Sudan and the Central African Republic since 2014.
