Vietnam secure hard-fought victory over Myanmar

Vietnam entered the match in a must-win position, leaving pressure on Myanmar’s defense, but the win didn’t come early despite attempts.

Vietnam won 1-0 against Myanmar in a tough fight on May 13 in Viet Tri Stadium, north of Hanoi, securing first place in Group A, which also includes Indonesia, the Philippines, and Timor Leste.

The only score was made in the 76th minute by Captain Do Hung Dung who got the pass from Le Van Do, easing pressure for the home team as Myanmar had won their first two games in Group A.

Hung Dung’s finishing phase caused Viet Tri Stadium to explode. Lights were lit through the phones while the endless cheers created a festive atmosphere.

The last 10 minutes witnessed heavy rain, which caused many difficulties for Vietnam defenders. But the score 1-0 remained until the final whistle and Vietnam climbed on top of Group A with 7 points, opening the door for Vietnam to the semi-finals of SEA Games 31 Men’s Football.

Giving a post-match speech, Coach Park Hang-seo of Vietnam said: “Though Vietnam won 1-0, we did not play well in the first half and the second half. The main reason included wrong passes unsuccessful kicks and corner kicks. I’m unsatisfied with both halves.”

In a must-win position, Vietnam surged from the start, leaving Myanmar’s net in an unsafe state. However, victory did not come early for the home team, although Tuan Tai shot dangerously from a long distance, Tien Linh headed close to the goal and Hoang Duc finished strongly and made many corner kicks.

The victory over Myanmar U23 made Vietnam U23 consume a lot of energy. Some players have minor injuries.

Sharing after the match, Captain Do Hung Dung said that with a tight schedule, Vietnamese players had physical difficulties, but “We always try to play well to earn nice performances and look forward to continued cheering from the fans.”

Coach Velizar Popov of Myanmar said “Today, my players had a good performance. We had changed tactics to deal with the attacks of Vietnam. However, Myanmar did not have many opportunities to counterattack. Physically, Vietnam is better. We tried our best. I’m proud of my players.”

As of May 13, Vietnam led Group A with 7 points, followed by Indonesia with 6 points, and Myanmar with 6 points.

Vietnam will face Timor Leste on May 15.
