Vietnam sends troops to Myanmar for earthquake relief efforts

THE HANOI TIMES — The Ministry of National Defense on March 30 sent a delegation of 80 officers and military personnel, including engineers, medics, and border guards, to assist Myanmar in the aftermath of a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the country on March 28.

The earthquake has caused widespread destruction in Myanmar and neighboring countries, resulting in over 1,600 deaths, more than 3,400 injuries, and many people still missing. In response, the Myanmar government has called for international aid, and numerous countries and organizations, including China, Russia, India, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, Australia, and the World Health Organization, have already sent assistance.

At the deployment ceremony, General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff and Deputy Minister of National Defense, said Vietnam and Myanmar have maintained a strong and friendly partnership. Following the Party's foreign policy guidelines, Vietnam has always been ready to be a reliable partner, a trustworthy friend, and a responsible member of the international community.

The delegation is led by Major General Pham Van Ty, Deputy Director of the Search and Rescue Department under Vietnam People's Army's General Staff. The team is equipped with essential supplies, medical materials, six police dogs, and several tons of aid.

The personnel are drawn from various units, including the engineering corps, military hospitals, border defense forces, and the rescue and relief department. Many of these soldiers have prior experience in international disaster relief, including their participation in earthquake response efforts in Turkey in 2023. Their teamwork, discipline, and ability to operate under challenging conditions have earned them commendations.

Within 20 hours of receiving their assignment, all preparation tasks were completed, ensuring tight coordination and readiness to depart. The troops' proactive attitude and preparedness have been crucial to the success of this mission.

During the briefing, General Cuong addressed the challenges the team would face, including difficult weather conditions, in Myanmar. He urged the personnel to stay resilient, overcome obstacles, and ensure the safety of both themselves and their equipment.

General Cuong said the team must have an effective coordination with international aid teams and Myanmar’s government, in addressing any emerging issues promptly and efficiently, while maintaining the integrity and high standards of the Vietnam People’s Army.

"Promoting the image of the army, with its traditional values of solidarity and responsibility, is an integral part of the mission," General Cuong added.

“Through this mission, Vietnam continues to assert its commitment to international solidarity and humanitarian assistance, reinforcing its readiness to participate in peacekeeping and disaster relief efforts worldwide.”
