Vietnam, Turkey vow stronger defense ties

Both sides pledged to expand cooperation in training, defense industry, cybersecurity and peacekeeping.

THE HANOI TIMES — Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler highlighted Vietnam’s strategic importance and pledged to expand cooperation in training, defense industry, cybersecurity and peacekeeping during his talks with Vietnamese Defense Minister, General Phan Van Giang, in Hanoi on September 11.

The meeting took place during Guler’s official visit to Vietnam from September 10 - 11, highlighting both sides’ determination to strengthen defense ties as part of their long-standing friendship and growing multifaceted partnership.

Giang reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of independence, self-reliance, peace and friendship. He also stressed the “four no’s” in defense policy, including: no military alliances, no siding against others, no foreign bases and no use or threat of force.

He stressed Vietnam’s determination to resolve disputes peacefully, based on international law and particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982), ensuring regional stability, cooperation and development.

Giang praised bilateral progress in delegation exchanges, defense industry, training, UN peacekeeping operations and multilateral coordination.

He proposed effective implementation of the July 2025 defense cooperation agreement, focusing on the navy, air force, cybersecurity, engineering and demining.

Guler welcomed Vietnam’s proposals and commended efforts to promote the defense attaché mechanism to enhance dialogue and coordination. He confirmed Turkey’s readiness to host Vietnamese officers and cadets for advanced military training.

He emphasized that expanding defense ties will reinforce bilateral relations and foster deeper mutual trust, stronger friendship, and broader comprehensive collaboration between Vietnam and Turkey.
