Viettel, VNPT and MobiFone hold 95% shares of the telecom services market

According to the 2017 White Book on Vietnam Information and Communication Technology (ICT), 3 leading telecom service providers Viettel, VNPT and MobiFone is holding 95% shares of the market in 2016.


Statistics of the ICT White book 2017 recently published shows, in 2016, the telecommunication market (including both 2G and 3G) has been dominated by 5 enterprises Viettel, VNPT, MobiFone, Vietnamobile and Gtel.

However, compared with the same period of 2013, which was published in the ICT White book 2014, while 2 enterprises Vietttel and VNPT have increased their shares in the telecommunication market, shares of the remaining threes of MobiFone, Gtel and Vietnamobile have been reduced. Specifically, Viettel has increased its shared in the market from 43.5% in 2013 to 46.7% in 2016; VNPT holds 22.2%, up to 4.8% compared to 2013.

MobiFone’s shares in telecommunication market has been significantly reduced; from 31.78% in 2013 to 26.1% in 2016. The reducing rate of Vietnamobile and Gtel in 2016 compared with 2013 is 1.17% (from 4.07% to 2.9%) and 1.12% (from 3.22% to 2.1%) respectively. 

With regard to the shares of 2G subcribers, Viettel is leading with 42.5%; staying behind are MobiFone and VNPT, with shares of 30% and 21.5% respectively. Similarly, for shares of 3G subcribers, in 2016, the subscriber number of Viettel is 57.7%, an increase of 16% compared with 2013. 3G subscriber shares of VNPT is 23.9%, up to 1.4% compared with 2013; the shares of MobiFone reduced from 33.5% in 2013 to 16.1% in 2016. 

According to the ICT White book of Vietnam 2017, as of the end of 2016, Vietnam has 36.2 million 3G subscribers. 

The statistics in the White Book also shows, the telecommunication and internet market of Vietnam has positive signs. In 2016, Vietnam has 74 enterprises providing services on terestrial mobile network, reducing 6 enterprises compared to 2015; the number of enterprises providing internet service is 51, reducing 1 enterprise compared to 2015. Total revenue of telecommunication and internet in 2016 reached 136.5 trillion VND, equivalent to 6.16 billion USD (increase 1.6% compared with 2015).

Total number of 2G and 3G subscribers is more than 128 million, in which 36.2 million are using 3G, reaching the rate of 39 subscribers/ 100 people. The number of fixed broadband internet subscribers is more than 9 million. 

With regard to shares of enterprises providing the fixed broadband internet services, in 2016, the biggest shares belong to VNPT with 46.1%; after that is Viettel with 26.1%, FPT with 18.6%, SCTV with 5.7%, and 3.5% is for CMC, SPT, NetNam, GDS and VTC.

Ministry of Information & Communication said, new changes in the 2017 ICT White book compared with previous editions are the addition of new criteria in conformity with international standard, in turn meets the demand for information management and contribute to the development of ICT Vietnam, such as: public online services, IT application in enterprises’ operation, the view number, the development status of IT services.

At the same time, information published and issued in editions such as statistics of organizations, IT enterprises, ICT events have been reduced in the 2017 ICT White book of Vietnam.
