VUSTA pushes up Vietnam's research and application of science and technology: PM

The body that represents domestic and overseas intellectuals becomes a reliable consultancy to the country's authorities.

The Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) has been a good consultative body in the country’s policies and directions over the past decades, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has said.

VUSTA, which has gathered intellectuals in the science and technology, becomes a reliable organization for the country’s authorities, the prime minister said at VUSTA’s congress held on December 25.

Speaking at the event that gathered more than 900 representatives, PM Phuc said the body has been active in promoting consultancy, social criticism and supervision, largely contributing to the application of scientific theories in big programs and projects.

"The contributions by both domestic and overseas Vietnamese intellectuals together with international affairs have improved Vietnam’s image in the world’s agendas," the PM said.

The congress has elected a board of director for VUSTA in the 2021-26 term with 26 members. The organization’s new chairman is Phan Xuan Dung, who is also the head of the National Assembly’s Committee for Science, Technology, and Environment.

Being the biggest network of non-governmental science and technology organizations in Vietnam, VUSTA represents the community of more than three million intellectuals in this field, operating under the principle of voluntarism and democracy, the body said on its website.

It maintains relations with international agencies, non-governmental organizations, embassies and other stakeholders concerning the development of Vietnam.

VUSTA’s mission is gathering and uniting Vietnamese intellectuals in science and technology inside and outside the country; acting as a bridge between member associations and state agencies; and representing the legal rights and interest of its members.

So far, VUSTA has 152 member associations, one publishing house, a fund called Vietnam Fund for Supporting Technological Creations (VIFOTEC), and 113 news outlets.
