Diplomacy holds vital role in Vietnam's defense and development: Party Chief
The diplomatic service plays a vital role in safeguarding independence, promoting cooperation and supporting Vietnam’s sustainable development.
THE HANOI TIMES — Vietnamese diplomacy has served as a cornerstone of national construction and defense over the past 80 years, General Secretary To Lam said on August 25, noting its mission of safeguarding independence while fostering international cooperation.
Lam was speaking at a ceremony celebrating the 80 years of the diplomatic sector held in Hanoi. He stressed that diplomacy is vital for an independent country, as it reflects the will of a peace-loving people with aspirations for development.
He recalled under the leadership of President Ho Chi Minh and the first foreign minister, Vietnam’s diplomacy began with a dual mission that includes safeguarding the nation’s independence while expanding cooperation with friends worldwide.

He said Vietnamese diplomacy serves the Fatherland and the people while also fostering hope for a peaceful and cooperative world.
Lam called for building a comprehensive and modern diplomacy with a strong Vietnamese identity. Priorities should include economic and technological diplomacy, attracting high-quality resources, and expanding markets through new-generation free trade agreements.
"Vietnam must take an active role in multilateral forums, contribute to solving global challenges such as climate change, energy and water security, and promote Vietnamese culture and identity," said Lam.
During the event, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son praised the sector’s resilience through 80 years of challenges and historic achievements.

Son said that 80 years represents the devotion of thousands of diplomats, many enduring hardship and separation to protect national interests and uphold Vietnam’s image.
In today’s uncertain world, he called for renewed thinking, decisive action, and strong determination, urging diplomats to act with courage, wisdom and aspiration.
"Diplomacy must remain a guiding flame and a strong pillar for development, linking national interests with global trends and supporting Vietnam’s long-term goals," said Son.
The anniversary also honored the proud traditions of the diplomatic service and the contributions of generations of diplomats, while covering seminars, photo exhibitions, documentary screenings, and cultural performances.
For the first time, rare and valuable documents were presented in the exhibition “Vietnamese Diplomacy in the Ho Chi Minh Era.”
Meanwhile, the ministry launched many activities like traditional gatherings, tributes to former diplomats, awards for collectives and individuals, field trips, thematic discussions, and reviews of overseas Vietnamese affairs.
Vietnamese missions abroad actively joined by organizing meaningful activities, spreading the spirit of the anniversary and reaffirming their determination to uphold the proud tradition of Vietnamese diplomacy.
On this occasion, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received the First-class Labor Order. The diplomatic service has twice received the Gold Star Order, once the Ho Chi Minh Order, and many other prestigious honors.
