Explore hidden charm in terraced fields in northern Vietnam

Mien Doi remains untouched by mass tourism and appeals to those seeking a slower pace of life.

THE HANOI TIMES — Around 130 kilometers from Hanoi, the capital city, Mien Doi has emerged as a promising destination for community-based and ecological tourism, thanks to its pristine beauty and cultural wealth.

Spanning over 400 hectares of centuries-old terraced rice fields shaped by the Muong ethnic people, Mien Doi is nestled in the remote mountainous Coc Thuong Commune in the northern province of Phu Tho (formerly Hoa Binh Province).

During the rainy season from May to June and the harvest season from September to October, the fields transform into sweeping layers of shimmering gold, offering a picturesque landscape.

Some local households have started offering homestay services, providing visitors with hands-on experiences such as rice harvesting, traditional cuisine preparation, and cultural immersion in the heritage of the Muong ethnic minority.

The first Mien Doi Terraced Fields Festival was held on October 26, 2024, featuring cultural performances, traditional activities, and scenic tours of the terraced fields.

Mien Doi has been identified as one of five priority sites under Phu Tho's 2025-2030 community tourism development plan with specific approaches to improve access, promote cultural values, and attract investment to preserve the landscape and support sustainable livelihoods for the Muong community.
