Hanoi launches green tourism initiative for Duong Lam village

it is expected to draw in more eco-aware tourists and support the long-term expansion of the area's tourism sector.

The Hanoi Times — An innovative effort to promote green tourism and environmental protection in Duong Lam Ancient Village, Son Tay Town, Hanoi, was announced on March 14 by the Hanoi Department of Tourism in partnership with the Hanoi UNESCO Travel Club.

The project aims to make Duong Lam a "green" destination that respects the environment, according to Tran Trung Hieu, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Tourism. It is designed to raise awareness among residents and tourists about the value of preserving the village's natural environment and cultural heritage for future generations.

Truong Minh Tien, Chairman of the Hanoi UNESCO Association, emphasized the importance of this endeavor in light of the growing global concern about plastic waste. "Tourism, as a major contributor to waste generation, plays a key role in fighting against pollution," he said. "This program seeks to clean up the environment while promoting a green lifestyle and supporting the sustainable development of tourism in Hanoi and Vietnam."

A centerpiece of the program was the unveiling of a new sign at Duong Lam Ancient Village, which reads: "Tourism businesses join hands to protect the environment: Say No to Plastic Waste." The event brought together officials and locals in a clean-up activity, collecting trash to keep the area eco-friendly.

The program also gave visitors a chance to explore the village's rich heritage, including Va Temple, Mia Pagoda, centuries-old houses, and traditional communal sites, as well as Duong Lam's cultural history and the local customs and crafts that make it a unique and vibrant destination.

This initiative is a component of the Hanoi Department of Tourism’s broader strategy to support local travel businesses and create new tourism routes that showcase the beauty of Son Tay Town and Duong Lam Ancient Village. By encouraging eco-friendly travel, it is expected to draw in more eco-aware tourists and support the long-term expansion of the area's tourism sector.

About 40 kilometers from downtown Hanoi, Duong Lam Village is steadfast in its commitment to developing sustainable tourism products linked to preserving both tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

In the midst of rapid modernization, this unique heritage site on the outskirts of Hanoi continues to honor its rich history and ancient charm. Deeply connected to their cultural roots, the locals have embraced their role as guardians of their heritage, contributing to the growth of community-based tourism.

Visitors to Duong Lam are drawn to its centuries-old architecture, including the iconic laterite houses that speak volumes about the village's rich history.

The efforts have ensured the village's authenticity and increased tourist arrivals by 30% over the past year to a total of 120,000.

A one-day tour to Hanoi's heritage gem, Duong Lam Ancient Village, offers visitors an unforgettable journey through unique history, culture, natural beauty, and gastronomy.
