Fidel’s affection for Vietnam symbolizes deep bond between two countries

Even five decades later, Fidel Castro's lasting influence resonates strongly with many Vietnamese people, portraying him as an enduring symbol of revolutionary heroism, the relentless pursuit of freedom and happiness, and an unbreakable bond between the two nations.

Nguyen Van Hay, Chairman of the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Organization of Hanoi made the remarks on September 22 at a conference titled “Vietnam-Cuba: A Special Solidarity Friendship” to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Fidel Castro’s first historic visit to Vietnam (September 1973 – September 2023).

The conference provides a deeper insight into the historic moments, celebrates the enduring brotherly solidarity, and instills pride in the invaluable support of Cuban Leader Fidel Castro and the Cuban people to Vietnam.

Hay recalled the iconic image of Fidel Castro in his olive-green military uniform, proudly waving the victory flag in the fiery land of Quang Tri in September 1973. This image has become a symbol of revolutionary heroism and the unwavering mutual support and pure ties between Vietnam and Cuba, embodying the spirit of rebellion and the shared desire for freedom.

"Even after 50 years, Fidel's legacy continues to profoundly influence the hearts and lives of countless Vietnamese people. He remains a symbol of revolutionary heroism, the spirit of resistance, and the enduring aspiration for freedom and happiness. He embodies the deep affection between the Cuban people and the Vietnamese people,"  Hay said.

Ta Nam Chien, Chairman of the Ba Dinh District People's Committee, noted the program serves as a valuable means to educate and foster awareness of noble revolutionary ideals among the younger generation.

“It underscores the willingness to fight for the independence, freedom, peace, and the prosperous development of both nations, located in the East and West hemispheres of the globe,” he said.

Through this event, Chien said the district also seeks to introduce the unique cultural characteristics of Hanoi, especially those of Ba Dinh, to Cuban friends.

He added that the government and people of Ba Dinh District are eager to establish a sister city relationship with a district in the Cuban capital, Havana, to further enhance people-to-people diplomacy and expand international cooperation.

Ambassador of Cuba to Vietnam Orlando Nicolas Hernandez Guillen reiterated his commitment to continue efforts to strengthen and expand the longstanding relationship between Vietnam and Cuba. The two nations share a tradition of close ties and have consistently celebrated achievements, anniversaries, and significant events together.

One such notable event is Fidel Castro's crossing of the 17th parallel to the newly liberated zone in southern Vietnam in September 1973. Even though five decades have passed, that visit still leaves an indelible mark in the hearts and minds of the people of Vietnam and Cuba, said the Ambassador.

He expressed his belief that the discussion would enhance the understanding of significant historical milestones in the bilateral relations' history among the young generations of both countries. This understanding would further nurture and preserve the profound affection between Vietnam and Cuba.

During the discussion, delegates, and representatives of the younger generation of the city had the opportunity to appreciate and reminisce about Fidel Castro's historic visit 50 years ago. They did so through photographs, documents, videos, and narratives shared by the participants.

Among them, Nguyen Viet Thao, former Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association, recounted stories and actions that exemplify the enduring, genuine friendship between Vietnam and Cuba.

Thao was among the first group of Vietnamese students invited by Fidel to pursue various fields of study in Cuba during the war in Vietnam and subsequently returned to contribute to their homeland.
