Folk games connect Vietnamese-Australian children to cultural roots

Through an array of activities, children can explore their interests while naturally connecting with their heritage.

THE HANOI TIMES — A special event titled "Holiday Fun Day" was recently held in Sydney, Australia to nurture the love of their native and cultural roots in Vietnamese-Australian children.

The free event promoted cultural exchange and community engagement between the Vietnamese and local Australian communities.

Activities included making crafts from recycled materials, such as stuffed animals and crocheted items; creating glass pebble mosaics; coloring; and preparing food.

Meanwhile, traditional Vietnamese games were introduced as well, including cuop co (flag snatching), tug-of-war, and drumming.

Thuc Anh, a Vietnamese-Australian who has lived in Australia for nearly 30 years, told the Vietnam News Agency that she brought her children to the event in hopes of helping them connect with the Vietnamese community and maintain a shared cultural identity.

"Aside from the fun, my children get to experience  Vietnamese games that are rarely played in Australia," said Thuc Anh.

One of the most anticipated activities at "Holiday Fun Day" was creating mosaic art with glass collected from beaches. This activity blended creativity with environmental awareness and fostered bonds among the children.
