Hanoi rolls out AI-powered traffic cameras to ease burden on police officers

The new AI camera system demonstrates Hanoi’s commitment to modernizing traffic regulation with cutting-edge technology.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi targets that all traffic cameras will be AI-powered by December, meaning traffic policemen will no longer be on the street, Lieutenant General Nguyen Thanh Tung, the department's director, said on July 14.

The Hanoi Police Department has installed 260 AI-powered cameras throughout the city.

More cameras will be set up to ensure security during the grand celebrations of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2).

Tung told a meeting hosted by the Hanoi People’s Committee with 126 communes and wards that the AI cameras will help the police improve traffic control and regulate traffic lights with greater precision by analyzing vehicles on the road, thus reducing congestion.

During the meeting, the police chief of Hanoi also addressed environmental pollution issues.

He identified three main types of pollution, including air, water, and solid waste from construction sites, businesses, and households.

"The tangled overhead electrical and telecom wires hanging from utility poles are an eyesore,” said Tung. “We must take decisive action to bury them underground.”

Police will also increase checks and enforcement against sidewalk encroachment for business activities to restore order and keep public spaces clear.
