Halt in USAID projects impact human safety in Vietnam: Spokeswoman

Vietnam seeks continued US collaboration to enhance bilateral relations under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Halting USAID support, especially projects on unexploded ordnance clearance and remediation in Bien Hoa Airport, would severely impact human safety and environmental conditions in affected areas.

Spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang said at a press conference on February 13.

“We are deeply concerned about the decisions made by the United States regarding the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Over the years, through various cooperation mechanisms, including USAID, the two countries have effectively collaborated in numerous fields such as health, education, environment, climate change, disaster relief, and especially addressing war legacies,” Hang said in a statement.

USAID projects have made a meaningful impact across numerous provinces and cities in Vietnam, enhancing the lives of those who benefit from them, she highlighted.

She said that US support and Vietnam’s collaboration in locating American personnel missing in action in the war have yielded significant results, deepening the friendship between the two nations, fostering trust, and strengthening Vietnam-US relations.

The efforts hold particular importance as the two countries celebrate 30 years of diplomatic ties in 2025.

“Vietnam expects to continue collaborating with the US to effectively implement these cooperative initiatives, fostering bilateral relations in line with the spirit of the Joint Statement designated in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation, and sustainable development,” Hang emphasized.
