Hanoi greenlights road linking Gia Binh Airport

The road construction project is in line with the city's general planning guidelines and ensures connectivity with existing transportation networks outlined in approved planning schemes.

Hanoi has given the green light to a plan to build a 50-kilometer road with Gia Binh Aiport the northern province of Bac Ninh.

The city approved the alignment proposed by the Department of Planning and Architecture. The road will run 28 kilometers through Hanoi, including eight kilometers of new construction, the section coinciding with the Hanoi-Thai Nguyen Expressway and Ring Road No. 3, and the 20.54-kilometer Tu Lien Bridge Road.

Both Hanoi and Bac Ninh have agreed on a road width of 120 meters and are studying urban development along both sides of the road.

In addition, the two localities are studying the feasibility of a metro line along the route from Gia Binh Airport to central Hanoi.

The road construction project is in line with the city's general planning guidelines and ensures connectivity with existing transportation networks outlined in approved planning schemes, including Ring Road No. 3, National Highway 5, and the road connecting Giang Bien Bridge - Vinh Tuy - Ring Road 2 and Ha Huy Tap Street.

Previously, the Department of Planning and Architecture was tasked with leading the collaboration among various departments, Bac Ninh Province and the Transport Engineering Design Incorporated (TEDI) to explore construction options for the road in line with the central government's directives on the project.

In December 2024, the Ministry of Public Security began construction of Gia Binh Airport in Xuan Lai Commune and Gia Binh Town, Bac Ninh Province. Covering an area of 125 hectares, the airport is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. 

It will serve as a level 3 heliport, a level 3 military airport, and a category III C civil airport.

In January, the provincial government proposed that Gia Binh be included in the national airport network plan. The airport will be expanded to 363.5 hectares, an increase of nearly 250 hectares from the initial phase.

In February, the Ministry of Transport asked for input from other ministries and Bac Ninh Province to include Gia Airport in the national airport network plan, which will require adjustments to the existing airport system plan.

A review by TEDI found that the total volume of cargo and passengers handled by the national airport system will remain unchanged from the current plan. However, passenger and cargo volumes at Noi Bai International Airport will be partially redistributed to Gia Binh Airport, requiring adjustments to Noi Bai's capacity.

Under the revised plan, Vietnam will have 31 airports by 2030, including 15 international and 16 domestic. By 2050, the country will have 34 airports, with the number of international airports remaining at 15 and the number of domestic airports increasing to 19, according to the Ministry of Transport.
