Hanoi Metro allows folding e-bikes on trains

Folding e-bikes remain permitted on Hanoi Metro trains, though passengers are advised to limit lithium battery use during peak hours.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi Metro on August 12 announced foldable bicycles are still allowed on the urban railway lines.

Sales Director Bui Xuan Huong said that there are no regulations prohibiting passengers from bringing folding bicycles with lithium batteries onto Cat Linh - Ha Dong and Nhon - Hanoi Station trains.

Some staff members misunderstood internal discussions, and prematurely informed passengers that such bicycles were not allowed, affecting travel on the morning of August 12, he said.

“We have asked our staff to continue serving passengers with foldable bikes, including those with lithium batteries, until further notice,” said Huong.

We recommends passengers prioritize public buses and shared bicycles to travel to and from metro stations.”

Hanoi has also arranged public bicycle services at stations along its two urban railway lines (Cat Linh – Ha Dong and Nhon – Hanoi Station) and in the areas of former Dong Da, Thanh Xuan, Ba Dinh, and Cau Giay districts to develop green, multimodal transport, connect different types of public transportation, and change local travel habits.

Since the Cat Linh - Ha Dong metro line entered service in late 2021, passengers have regularly brought folding bicycles on board, both with and without batteries. For many, folding bikes are a practical mode of transport thanks to their compact size and mobility.

Hanoi’s two metro lines served nearly 10 million passenger trips from January to May, with the Cat Linh – Ha Dong and Nhon – Hanoi Station lines.

Most metro systems worldwide ban or restrict folding bikes with lithium batteries due to fire safety concerns, especially during peak hours.
