State President To Lam elected Party General Secretary

The newly elected Party Chief stressed the importance of maintaining unity and solidarity.

State President To Lam has been elected as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam with absolute support at the 13th Party Central Committee’s conference held today, August 3.

Upon his election, General Secretary To Lam delivered a speech in which he reaffirmed his commitment to inherit and promote the revolutionary achievements of the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and previous generations of leaders.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining unity and consensus, expressing the determination of the  Party Central Committee, the Politburo, and the Secretariat to lead the entire Party, people, and military to accomplish the goals and tasks set at the 13th National Congress of the Party and to hold a successful 14th Party  Congress to steer the nation towards robust development in this new era.

Below is a brief biography of General Secretary To Lam:

To Lam was born on July 10, 1957, in Nghia Tru Commune, Van Giang District, Hung Yen Province.

He joined the Communist Party of Vietnam on August 22, 1981. He is a professor with a PhD in Law.

To Lam has been a member of the Central Committee during the 11th, 12th, and 13th  terms and a Politburo member during the 12th and 13th terms.

Additionally, he has been a deputy in the 14th and 15th National Assembly.

Lam served as Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Public Security from 2010 to 2016 before being appointed Minister, a position he held from 2016 to 2024. In January 2019, he was promoted to General of the People's Public Security.

In May 2024, To Lam was elected President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
