Sun PhuQuoc Airways to boost connection to Vietnam's biggest island

Sun PhuQuoc Airways is an airline aiming to become Vietnam’s first resort aviation model.

THE HANOI TIMES — Sun PhuQuoc Airways (SPA), an airline invested by one of the largest real estate developers in Vietnam, Sun Group, has set the target to bring the world to Phu Quoc and take the country's biggest island to the world by a fleet of modern airplanes.

SPA earlier this week welcomed its first Airbus A321NX aircraft, which is the latest move in the airways’ investment strategy to build a modern fleet operating with world-class standards in Phu Quoc Island.

In the context of increasing demand for aircraft in the worldwide, Sun PhuQuoc Airways' ownership of the latest generation A321NX aircraft shows the airline's potential and determination to provide high-class and professional service quality.

The airline’s first aircraft marks the launch of Vietnam’s first carrier to base its central hub in Phu Quoc, reflecting its unique development strategy.

Currently, several airlines operate flights to Phu Quoc, including Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, and Jetstar Pacific, with both domestic and international routes. However, there remains ongoing aircraft shortage to the island, leading to higher airfares, especially during peak travel times, potentially causing delays and impacting passenger experience.

Phu Quoc is a popular tourist destination with strong growth potential, particularly in international tourism. The emergence of new airlines like Sun PhuQuoc Airways could help ease the capacity shortage and meet the growing demand, Truong said.

The latest Agoda report ranked Phu Quoc as the most searched international destination for 2025, with accommodation searches rocketing by 266% year-on-year.

In the first seven months of this year, the island received over 800,000 foreign visitors, a 79% increase year-on-year, according to the An Giang Department of Tourism.

Phu Quoc now draws a diverse international crowd from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Australia, the UK, Russia, and beyond. The number of foreign arrivals is expected to continue rising sharply through the end of the year as more international flights are launched or reinstated following earlier disruptions.

The island aims to welcome seven million tourists in 2025, including one million foreigners, up 17.26% and 3.9% year-on-year, respectively.

By 2030, Phu Quoc is planned to welcome more than 23 million visitors, including over 1.6 million international tourists. This is part of a broader plan to develop Phu Quoc into a world-class tourism center.
