Tuy Hoa Airport to get upgraded to handle 3 million passengers by 2030
The Ministry of Transport has instructed Airport Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to review and adjust the plan for different airports to stay in line with a prime minister-approved plan.
ACV, the largest airport developer in the country, is developing a plan to expand Tuy Hoa Airport in the southern central province of Phu Yen, and build a new terminal that can handle 2.5 million passengers per year in the 2020-2025 period.
According to the master plan on air transport development till 2020 with vision to 2030, which has been approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Tuy Hoa airport’s capacity will reach 600,000 passengers per year by 2020, and three million per year by 2030.
The Ministry of Transport gave instructions to ACV to review and adjust the plan for different airports to stay in line with the new plan.
The corporation was invested in different items including flight safety, night lightening and the air traffic control tower to improve the Tuy Hoa airport’s effectiveness, according to Le Manh Hung, director of ACV.
In 2017, the airport received more than 337,000 passengers, equaling 61% of its present capacity. At present three airlines operate flights to/from the airport with 25 flights per route per week connecting the locale with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Earlier, the Vietnamese government approved adjustments to the master plan on air transport development till 2020 with vision to 2030. The revised plan is aimed to raise Vietnam’s air transport market among ASEAN’s top four by 2030 in terms of volume and with a fleet of modern aircraft. Three ASEAN standard passenger and cargo transportation centers will be established.
A total number of 23 airports will have been put into operation by 2020, including 13 international ones and 10 domestic. By 2030, a total number of 28 airports are expected to come into operation, including 13 international ones and 15 domestic ones.
Compared to the master plan approved in 2009, the plans for Na San, Lao Cai and Vung Tau airports have been removed. Meanwhile, according to the revised plan, the land for airport development has been slashed to 13,321 hectares from the previously approved 23,000 hectares.
