Typhoon Wipha causes damage to homes and farmland in northern Vietnam

Typhoon Wipha caused damage in northern Vietnam, prompting mass evacuations and emergency efforts to protect crops, infrastructure, and communities.

THE HANOI TIMES — As Typhoon Wipha (Storm No. 3) hovered over northern Vietnam on July 22, it caused widespread damage to homes, farmland, and dike systems.

Initial reports show that 79 homes in the central province of Nghe An had their roofs torn off while more than 107,000 hectares of rice fields across the provinces of Hung Yen, Thanh Hoa, and Ninh Binh have been submerged.

Local authorities are using pumps to drain floodwater and protect crops.

The storm also triggered dike incidents. A 20-meter crack appeared on the surface of the right bank of the Cau River dyke in Hanoi's Da Phuc commune.

In Thanh Hoa, over 65 meters of the left bank dyke erosion occurred in Hoang Chau commune.

Ninh Binh reported 5 meters of erosion at the Nam Quan Lieu dyke, which was temporarily repaired with tarps and sandbags.

According to the Department of Dike Management and Natural Disaster Prevention, winds reached levels 6–7, gusting to level 10, causing widespread damage in provinces from Ninh Binh to Thanh Hoa.

Rainfall was intense, reaching 374 mm in Sam Son (Thanh Hoa) and 308 mm in Chau Nga (Nghe An).

Nearly 12,500 residents were evacuated to ensure safety, mostly in Ninh Binh, Haiphong, and Quang Ninh, along with an additional 800 in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An.

Heavy rainfall of 50-100 mm, possibly exceeding 200 mm in some areas, is forecast for Thanh Hoa and Nghe An through July 23.

The water level in major rivers is rising rapidly, with some stations already exceeding alarm level III.
