Vietnam among top SEA budget-friendly destinations

The magazine highlights the country’s affordability, rich cultural experiences, and delicious street food, making it an ideal choice for travelers on a tight budget.

THE HANOI TIMES — A recent feature in the renowned travel magazine Time Out touted Vietnam as one of the best budget-friendly destinations in Southeast Asia.

In an article titled "The Most Affordable Countries to Visit in Southeast Asia," writer Lola Méndez, who has explored the region for five years, described Vietnam as a standout for its exceptional value.

With an average daily expense of just US$20, visitors can enjoy hearty meals, comfortable accommodations, and immersive cultural activities without breaking the bank. The country is also lauded for its exceptionally affordable beer, with a pint of local brew costing as little as $ 1.07, and street food such as pho or banh mi priced under $1.

Accommodations are equally budget-friendly. Highly rated dormitories and guesthouses (with a rating above 8.0 on Booking.com) are available for around $3.07 per night. Public transportation, such as buses, costs less than $0.53, and motorcycle taxis, like GrabBike, charge under $1.07 per ride.

Mendez described Vietnam as a destination where travelers can “experience near-luxury on a backpacker’s budget.” She gave examples such as a scenic train ride from Hanoi to Hue for $30.66 and street food meals for just $8.40 per day.

The writer also emphasized the country's wealth of cultural experiences, such as traditional water puppet shows for US$4 and free entry to many temples and museums. Even popular attractions like the Marble Mountains in Danang cost only $1.52 for admission.

With its combination of low costs, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes, Vietnam continues to solidify its reputation as a top choice for budget-conscious travelers seeking unforgettable experiences.
