Prime Minister Chinh made the statement during a phone call with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the evening of July 30.
“Vietnam consistently supports and stands ready to participate in ASEAN’s collective efforts, particularly in coordination with Malaysia as the 2025 ASEAN Chair, to address regional challenges and strengthen intra-bloc unity,” Prime Minister Chinh stated.
During the talk, Prime Minister Anwar updated Prime Minister Chinh on Malaysia’s recent initiatives as ASEAN Chair to address rising tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
He reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to promoting dialogue and preserving regional solidarity. He urged both sides to exercise restraint, refrain from using force, and resolve their disputes peacefully in accordance with international law, the UN Charter, the ASEAN Charter, and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC).
PM Chinh commended Prime Minister Anwar’s leadership and Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair in advancing peaceful solutions to the Cambodia -Thailand border dispute. He referenced the July 28 meeting between Cambodia’s Prime Minister and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister, which resulted in a ceasefire, an important step toward de-escalation.
The Cambodia-Thailand tensions over the past few days have killed at least 38 people. The conflicts between the two neighboring ASEAN countries flared up in late May.
Also at the conversation, Chinh welcomed the frequent high-level communication between Vietnam and Malaysia, reflecting growing political trust between the two countries under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
On this occasion, he conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from General Secretary To Lam, President Luong Cuong, and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to Prime Minister Anwar.
Regarding bilateral cooperation, both leaders agreed to deepen their partnership through enhanced trust and coordination in technology and innovation, energy, and cross-border electricity transmission among Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore, to establish an ASEAN power grid.
They also committed to accelerating the signing of a rice trade agreement to support Malaysia’s food security with stable supplies from Vietnam.
The two prime ministers also exchanged views on regional and global matters of mutual interest, including trade and tariffs, in a shared commitment to peace, stability, and prosperity for their respective nations, the region, and the world.
