Vietnam backs Cuba’s path through challenges

During the state visit of President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, Vietnam delivered the first installment of VND385 billion (US$15 million) raised from a national fundraising program to support the Cuban people.

THE HANOI TIMES — Vietnam reaffirmed its consistent solidarity and steadfast support for the efforts of the Cuban Party, State and people to overcome current difficulties and challenges.

The view was reaffirmed in the Vietnam-Cuba Joint Statement released today [September 2], following the state visit of the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee and President of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, to the country from August 31 to September 2.

During his visit, the Cuban leader held talks with General Secretary To Lam and met with State President Luong Cuong, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man. He also attended the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and the National Day of Vietnam.

President Bermudez and the high-ranking Cuban delegation also participated in the ceremony marking the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Cuba (December 2, 1960 – December 2, 2025).

They visited the photo exhibition “65 Years of Vietnam–Cuba Special Friendship” and joined events that demonstrated the exemplary and unique relationship between the two Parties, States and peoples.

The Joint Statement highlighted the outcomes of the talks between the First Secretary and President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, and the Vietnamese leaders.

They reaffirmed that the visit reflected the great importance and high priority both sides place on their strategic relationship. Both sides underscored international solidarity, consistent support, and the desire to strengthen cooperation and development between Vietnam and Cuba in the new period.

Cuba reaffirmed its commitment to creating favorable conditions for expanding the presence and participation of Vietnamese businesses in its economic and social development

First Secretary and President Bermudez expressed gratitude for the effective assistance provided by the Vietnamese Party, State, and people, particularly in food security and energy security.

Both sides pledged to foster new cooperation models and expand participation in strategic sectors such as agriculture, agro-processing, renewable energy, and biotechnology and other promising sectors.

They agreed to co-host the 7th Theoretical Seminar and the 3rd Scientific Seminar, themed ‘Fidel Castro – Ho Chi Minh: Revolutionary Vision,’ marking the centenary of Fidel Castro’s birth in 2026.

The leaders also expressed satisfaction with the active support and mutual assistance the two countries continue to provide to each other at international organizations and multilateral forums of which both are members, particularly the United Nations and international political party forums.

Vietnam and Cuba have committed to work together to promote and deepen bilateral cooperation in economy, trade, and investment, and expressed satisfaction with the signing of several agreements: 

  • The intergovernmental agreement on rice production for the 2025–2027 period to gradually ensure food security in Cuba;
  • The minutes of the 42nd session of the Vietnam–Cuba Intergovernmental Commission on economic, scientific, and technical cooperation;
  • A memorandum of understanding between Ho Chi Minh City and the Cuban health sector;
  • An MoU on cooperation in archiving and records management;
  • An MoU on establishing a joint venture between Hoa Sen Investment Group Co., Ltd., the Institute of Green Economy, and Cuba’s Labiofam Group.
