Vietnam clinches third consecutive AFF U23 championship

Vietnam defeats Indonesia to win third straight ASEAN Championship, extending an unbeaten streak and reaffirming regional football dominance.

THE HANOI TIMES — Vietnam claimed the 2025 AFF U23 Championship by defeating the host Indonesia 1-0 on July 29.

This victory marked their third consecutive title, solidifying their position as the most successful team in the tournament's history.

The win extended Vietnam’s unbeaten streak in the AFF U23 Championship to 13 matches since 2019.

Despite facing intense pressure from over 80,000 Indonesian fans, coach Kim Sang-sik’s players remained composed and disciplined.

Though they had only 32% possession and made fewer passes, the Vietnamese team seized every opportunity.

The winning goal came in the 36th minute when Nguyen Cong Phuong slammed a loose ball into the net following a corner kick. It was personal redemption for Cong Phuong, who lost to Indonesia in the 2022 U16 final.

The final was tense both on and off the pitch. Coach Kim earned a yellow card for protesting the unusually long stoppage time, which lasted until the 101st minute.

Meanwhile, an Indonesian assistant coach was sent off for aggressive behavior. These chaotic moments showed Vietnam’s tactical discipline and composure in high-pressure situations.

For the second consecutive edition, Vietnam defeated Indonesia in the final, this time in Jakarta's fiery atmosphere, making the victory even sweeter.

With this result, Vietnam remains the most decorated team in the competition's history and continues to set the standard for youth soccer in Southeast Asia.
