Vietnam expects peaceful solutions for Thailand-Cambodia border tensions

Vietnam said Thailand and Cambodia are not only neighboring countries but also ASEAN member states that should resolve differences for the long-term benefit of both countries and the region.

THE HANOI TIMES — "Vietnam calls for the rising tension between Thailand and Cambodia to be resolved peacefully," said Pham Thu Hang, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Speaking to local media on July 24, Hang expressed Vietnam's deep concern about rising tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border.

She added that the Vietnamese Government is urging the two countries to refrain from further action that could lead to escalation.

“All disputes should be resolved through peaceful dialogue grounded in international law, the United Nations Charter, the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC),” the spokesperson said.

According to Hang, Thailand and Cambodia are not only neighboring countries, but also fellow ASEAN members. Therefore, both sides should resolve their differences peacefully and satisfactorily in the spirit of friendship and ASEAN solidarity for the long-term benefit of both countries and the region.

Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have escalated since late May. Both sides have ramped up troop deployments and imposed retaliatory economic measures.

The situation has further deteriorated in recent days with reports of rocket fire, airstrikes and landmine explosions, leading to casualties and the downgrading of diplomatic ties.
