Vietnam has new State President

To Lam, 67, becomes the new State President of Vietnam.

To Lam, 67, today (May 22) took oath as the new President of Vietnam at the 7th session of the 15th National Assembly.

He was elected by 472 out of 473 lawmakers present for the 2021-2026 term, following the resignation of his predecessor Vo Van Thuong in late March.

NA deputies are expected to vote to relieve To Lam of his duties as Minister of Public Security.

To Lam was born on July 10, 1957 in Van Giang District, Hung Yen Province. He joined the People's Public Security Force in October 1974. He became a member of the Communist Party in August 1982.

From 1997 to 2010, he held several key positions in the Ministry of Public Security. Between 2010 and 2016, Lam served as Deputy Minister of Public Security. In April 2016, he was elected to the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Secretary of the Communist Party’s Public Security Committee and Minister of Public Security.

Lam is a member of the Central Anti-Corruption Steering Committee, the  Central Political Protection Committee, the National Defense and Security Council, and the Central Judicial Reform Steering Committee.

He has served as a deputy in the National Assembly for the 14th and 15th legislative periods.
