PM urges closer energy ties with US firms

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh urged US-based Excelerate Energy to expand its cooperation with Vietnamese firms, develop liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure, and transfer technology. He welcomed plans to establish Vietnam as a regional LNG hub, proposing the launch of key projects by 2026 to boost energy security, reduce emissions, and strengthen trade and strategic ties between Vietnam and the US.

Startups to be poised to reach unicorn status

At the 2025 Venture Forum on May 29 in Hanoi, VinVentures’ CEO Le Han Tue Lam predicted that Vietnam will have at least six new unicorns by 2030. Lam highlighted the country’s rapid digital growth, supportive policies, and rising foreign investment. She positioned Vietnam as Southeast Asia’s next startup hub, noting its strong potential in the fintech, healthtech, and e-commerce sectors.

Vietnam and China speed up fruit trade

Vietnam and China on May 29 agreed to establish a “green lane” to expedite customs clearance of fresh Vietnamese fruits during peak harvest seasons. The two countries will extend border crossing operating hours, improve inspection efficiency, and work together to address trade bottlenecks. These efforts aim to increase Vietnam’s fruit exports to the Chinese market.

Vietnam’s defense ties with Turkey grow stronger

Vietnam and Turkey agreed to strengthen defense cooperation, including the exchange of high-level delegations, with the aim of signing a defense cooperation agreement. During Deputy Minister Pham Hoai Nam’s visit from May 28 to 30, the two countries discussed expanding ties in the defense industry and training programs. Turkey also expressed interest in deeper engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and welcomed Vietnam’s support for its participation in regional defense mechanisms.

Vietnamese firms showcase food exports abroad

From May 27 to 31, over 170 Vietnamese enterprises showcased their top food and beverage products at THAIFEX-Anuga Asia 2025, one of the world’s largest F&B trade fairs, in Thailand. This presence reflects Vietnam’s export potential. Companies introduced innovative, high-quality items aimed at expanding global market access and strengthening regional trade promotion.

Danang promotes tourism through festive events

The central city of Danang welcomed over 3.5 million visitors from January to April, marking an 18.6% year-on-year increase and generating over $448 million in tourism revenue. To boost its global appeal, the city will host the Enjoy Danang Festival from June 19 to 23, featuring beach sports, culinary events, and artistic kite shows. The festival will showcase Danang as a leading cultural and tourism hub in Southeast Asia.

Health sector braces for COVID-19 uptick

Vietnam is preparing for a possible resurgence of the novel coronavirus as cases are rising slightly and the NB.1.8.1 variant has appeared in Ho Chi Minh City. The Drug Administration is reviewing antiviral stockpiles, and the national immunization program is planning to request international vaccine support for high-risk groups.
