Cantho and Japan's Fukuoka sign cooperation agreement

This cooperation agreement opens a promising chapter in the relationship between the southern Vietnamese city of Cantho and the Japanese city of Fukuoka.

THE HANOI TIMES — The Mekong Delta city of Cantho and Fukuoka City, Japan, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on July 28 to cooperate in drainage and economic exchange, paving the way for a JPY 55.1 million (US$345,000) technical project to enhance the Mekong Delta city’s climate resilience.

The project will be funded through the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) Partnership Program and implemented via Fukuoka. Relevant agencies of both cities are completing the necessary procedures to roll out the initiative.

Tran Van Lau, Chairman of the Cantho People’s Committee, said the partnership would bring tangible benefits to residents and businesses. Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima welcomed the agreement as a key step to strengthen people-to-people and economic ties.

Fukuoka has maintained growing links with Vietnam in the water and environmental sectors, including participation in the Vietwater expo since 2023. Several Vietnamese firms have also expanded their operations in the Japanese city.
