Hanoi eateries serve up thousands of free meals for parade crowds

A family-owned restaurant on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street has served nearly 1,000 free bowls of seafood noodles and vermicelli to people lining the sidewalks to watch the parade in recent days.

People waiting outside the restaurant were offered free meals and drinks by the owner, who also kept the air-conditioned dining room open around the clock so children could rest while waiting for the parade.

Doan Van Son, 32, owner of a hotpot restaurant on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, said his family has run the business there for six years. “During the rehearsals, I saw many people waiting all day without a place to rest or use the restroom, so I decided to cook and invite them to eat. My family supported me wholeheartedly, and everyone joined in with great enthusiasm. We even opened our restrooms for free to the public,” he said.

Son said his family began the initiative on August 21. On rehearsal days, the restaurant suspended all business operations, including delivery services, to focus entirely on serving the public. Each time, they prepared around 100 kilograms of ingredients, 50 kilograms of noodles, 10 kilograms of squid, 6 kilograms of shrimp and beef, along with vegetables, enough to cook 200 to 250 bowls of noodles.

From the night of August 29 until the morning of August 30, the family worked overnight preparing broth and ingredients. Although the plan was to start serving at 5 a.m., Son decided to begin an hour earlier so children would have more time to eat comfortably.

Meals were prioritized for children, with a special non-spicy broth prepared just for them. Each serving included shrimp, beef, fish tofu with cheese, and fresh vegetables, all cooked with the same care and quality as the restaurant’s regular menu.

Son added that over the past three days of events, many people had come forward to help voluntarily. Some carried trays of food, others cleaned and organized the space. Although most had just met, a sense of closeness quickly formed, like members of one family. Whenever Son called for support, volunteers immediately stepped in to serve meals to the waiting crowds.
Nguyen Thi Nga, a resident of Dong Ngai Ward in Bac Ninh Province, said: “The restaurant owner here is truly kind. I arrived around 4 p.m., and everything was neatly organized. He came out to greet us and offered drinks. When it rained, they quickly set up tarps and umbrellas, and even brought out fans to keep us cool. Last night, they turned on the air conditioning and laid out mats and tables so the children could sleep inside. People waiting here haven’t felt a single drop of rain.”
Son coordinated each meal shift with about 50 people. Once announced, those wishing to eat lined up to register.
“At first, I was worried we wouldn’t manage to serve as many meals as planned. But thanks to everyone’s enthusiasm, all portions were finished in just over an hour. People kept praising how delicious the food was. We were truly happy to contribute a small part to make the wait for the National event easier. I’m very excited for the official celebration on September 2,” said Son.

“These days feel as if I’m welcoming relatives and friends into my own home. I hope everyone leaves with beautiful memories from this great National Day,” he added.
