Hanoi expands Hung Vuong avenue for major national events
The project aims to expand Ba Dinh Square, the nerve center of Hanoi and Vietnam, and a traditional site for parades and political ceremonies.
THE HANOI TIMES — The Hanoi authorities have approved the relocation and removal of 27 trees along the Hung Vuong and Doc Lap roads to facilitate landscaping and preparations for the 80th National Day anniversary.
According to the Hanoi Department of Construction, 19 healthy shade trees, including golden shower, milkwood, and hopea trees, will be temporarily relocated to nurseries for care before being replanted elsewhere in the city. Five aging or damaged trees that are deemed unsafe will be felled. A longan and two cassias in Ba Huyen Thanh Quan Garden will also be relocated or taken down.

The Hanoi Green Park Company began executing the tree relocation and felling on the night of July 24th, focusing on the stretch from Tran Phu to Nguyen Thai Hoc streets and within Ba Huyen Thanh Quan Garden. This work aligns with an urban enhancement plan to improve the infrastructure and landscape around Ba Dinh Square, a key venue for national events.
The Hanoi Infrastructure Maintenance Board is overseeing the project in collaboration with the city’s Technical Infrastructure Management Center for safety protocols. The relocated trees will be monitored to ensure their survival in their new locations.
The expansion of Hung Vuong Avenue supports preparations for a grand parade and march celebrating the 80th anniversary of National Day on September 2. The event is expected to draw around 30,000 people. The event will begin at 6:30 AM with a flag-raising ceremony and speeches by state leaders. A vibrant parade will follow then an artistic performance.
Landscaping the historic Hung Vuong Avenue facilitates the upcoming celebrations and contributes to long-term infrastructure and urban design improvements in the city.
Authorities emphasize that the project balances urban modernization with ecological considerations, prioritizing tree preservation where possible.
