Hanoi's new metro line to run beneath Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake

The project is part of the 11.5-km Metro Line No. 2 project (Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao) that stretches from the extension of Nguyen Van Huyen Road to Tran Hung Dao Street.

According to the plan, the route will pass through Hoan Kiem and Cua Nam wards with the underground section passing beneath Hang Duong, Hang Ngang, Hang Dao, Hoan Kiem Lake, Dinh Tien Hoang Street and Hang Bai Street.

For most of the underground stretch, the line will have two side-by-side tunnels. From Hang Duong Street to Hang Chieu Street, the tunnels will be built one above the other to fit the narrow space underground.

This section will include three stations numbered C8, C9 and C10. Station C8 remains unchanged as approved in the 2014 plan.

Station C9 (Hoan Kiem Lake) will have four floors spanning 7,700 square meters under Dinh Tien Hoang Street, the East Hoan Kiem Square and Park, and the headquarters of the Hanoi People’s Council and People’s Committee.

Station C10 (Tran Hung Dao) is located under the intersection of Hang Bai and Tran Hung Dao streets. It will also have four floors with a total area of nearly 5,500 square meters.

The station will feature a cross-shaped connection with Station S13 of Metro Line No. 3, providing convenient transfers for passengers in the future.

The new alignment replaces the C8–C10 section previously approved in 2013 and 2016. It will serve as the basis for updates and additions to related zoning and detailed planning projects.

The Hanoi People’s Committee assigned the Department of Planning and Architecture to certify drawings and monitor implementation.

The Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board is responsible for publicly disclosing the approved dossier, adjusting boundary markers, and finalizing the central line profile.

Local authorities of Hoan Kiem and Cua Nam wards must strictly manage land use and construction activities in accordance with the approved plan.
