Quang Ninh to install early warning system to better protect tourists
Quang Ninh will install a high-tech early warning system for thunderstorms and whirlwinds to improve safety for tourists and residents.
THE HANOI TIMES — The northern province of Quang Ninh will install an advanced early warning system in Ha Long Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay, and other coastal areas to better forecast severe weather and protect residents and tourists.
The system, equipped with high-resolution technology, will provide short-term and real-time alerts for extreme conditions such as thunderstorms, whirlwinds, heavy rainfall, and sea waves.
Provincial authorities expect the upgrade to significantly improve forecasting capacity and enhance maritime safety in one of Vietnam’s most popular tourist destinations.

The project was discussed at a working session on July 31 between the Quang Ninh Provincial People’s Committee and the Institute of Earth Sciences.
At the meeting, the institute proposed applying a model similar to one implemented in Hanoi since 2019, which combines enhanced monitoring and high-resolution forecasting to support economic development and social welfare. Participants also discussed practical feasibility, investment methods, technology appraisal, and system management.
Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Pham Duc An emphasized the importance of this project in improving disaster preparedness amid growing climate challenges.
He tasked local agencies with preparing an investment proposal to ensure the system is deployed promptly, accurately, and effectively.
Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Vietnam’s most popular tourist destinations, continues to drive tourism growth for Quang Ninh Province.
According to the Quang Ninh Department of Tourism, the province welcomed 19 million visitors, including 18% international arrivals. Total tourism revenue was estimated at VND46.5 trillion (US$1.77 billion).
In the first half of 2025, Quang Ninh attracted approximately 12.1 million visitors, up 16% year-on-year.
