Vietnam works to transform into tech creator

Vietnam is accelerating strategic technological development through targeted investments in innovation across AI, blockchain, UAVs, and 5G systems.

THE HANOI TIMES — Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology has proposed selecting three out of six strategic technologies for early implementation to boost innovation and demonstrate domestic capability in mastering core technologies.

The six shortlisted technologies include ORAN-based 5G network equipment, Vietnamese large language models and virtual assistants, autonomous mobile robots, blockchain-based traceability platforms, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and edge AI cameras.

The aforementioned items were chosen from a broader list of 11 tech groups and 35 strategic products approved by the prime minister in June.

According to Hoang Anh Tu, Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology, and Engineering, the ministry surveyed key enterprises and research institutions in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to identify potential investment needs and areas for local participation.

The three pilot products are expected to serve as practical models that help draw lessons and inspire broader technological advancement.

To promote the implementation of the key products, the Ministry of Science and Technology has made funding plans publicly available, inviting businesses, individuals, and research institutions to join. As part of this effort, the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (Nafosted) has been restructured to streamline procedures and accelerate fund disbursement.

Once a project is approved and assigned to a qualified organization, funding will be released immediately, bypassing the constraints of the annual budget cycle.

Each selected product will be supported through a tailored development program, which clearly defines its objectives, timeline, and required resources.

These efforts align with Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Manh Hung’s vision to transform Vietnam from a technology user into a technology creator.

To realize this vision, the ministry is developing a national strategy on key technologies through 2030, with a forward-looking perspective toward 2035.
