The airport will meet the International Civil Aviation Organization’s 4F standards and handle about 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo per year by 2030, rising to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tons by 2050.
Located across four communes in the northern province of Bac Ninh, the airport supports economic growth in Hanoi’s eastern development corridor and the broader northern region.
The master plan features two pairs of parallel runways spaced 1,800 meters apart, allowing independent take-offs and landings.
The project will need nearly 1,900 hectares of land and affect about 7,100 households. Total investment exceeds VND196 trillion ($7.4 billion), including VND141 trillion ($5.3 billion) for the first phase and VND55 trillion ($2.1 billion) for the second phase.
By 2030, the first phase will include a VIP apron, a passenger terminal, a cargo terminal and a maintenance zone with about 83 aircraft stands. This number will expand to around 123 stands by 2050.
The passenger terminal will follow a five-star design standard, maximize efficiency and connect smoothly with national, regional and provincial transport systems.
Hanoi will link directly with the airport through expressways, metro lines and national rail.

Authorities plan to place Gia Binh International Airport among Skytrax’s top 10 five-star airports worldwide.
They expect it to earn top passenger-experience ratings from Airports Council International and grow into a key aviation gateway for northern Vietnam and a regional hub for passenger transit, cargo handling and aircraft maintenance in the Asia-Pacific.
The new master plan for the largest airport in northern Vietnam will be key in shaping the region’s international gateway as air travel, logistics and regional connectivity continue to grow over the next 10 to 20 years.
