Phu Quoc speeds up digital transformation ahead of APEC 2027

Phu Quoc's development vision places a strategic emphasis on regional and global economic connectivity.

THE HANOI TIMES — Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island located in the southern province of An Giang, is pushing up key technology-driven solutions to transform into a smart maritime urban center.

Its efforts aim to enhance local governance, ensure public security, and improve the quality of life for residents while preparing for the 2027 APEC Leaders’ Week and other major national and international events.

According to Nguyen Xuan Kiem, Deputy Director of the An Giang Department of Science and Technology, the digital infrastructure and IT applications backing Phu Quoc's two-tier local government model are running smoothly.

The island has a 400 Mbps internet connection and a dedicated 6 Mbps data transmission line. The Public Administration Center is well equipped to meet operational demands.

Phu Quoc's vision is to become a distinctive maritime urban center and a world-class economic, commercial, and marine ecotourism hub, playing a strategic role in regional and global economic connectivity.

"To achieve this, the island is adapting its urban management to the principles of smart growth, energy efficiency, climate resilience, and national security, towards sustainable development and green growth," said Kiem.

Apart from strategic investments in technology and digitalization, Phu Quoc is steadily realizing its vision of becoming an international economic and tourism center.
