Hanoi breaks ground on Thuong Cat Bridge to boost northern connectivity

The construction of the Thuong Cat Bridge aims to boost regional connectivity and ease urban traffic congestion.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi on October 8 broke ground on the Thuong Cat Bridge and approach roads project, spanning 5.2 kilometers with a total investment of over VND7.3 trillion (US$290 million) from the city budget.

This is one of 10 major projects launched to celebrate the 71st anniversary of Hanoi’s Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 2025). The project is scheduled for completion in 2027 after two years of construction.

According to Ngo Ngoc Van, Director of the Hanoi Transportation Construction Investment Project Management Board, the cable-stayed bridge will stretch 3.9 kilometers across the Red River.

The route begins at Thuong Cat Ward and ends at Thien Loc Commune. It has eight lanes, six for motor vehicles and two for rudimentary vehicles.

Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Duong Duc Tuan said the bridge is one of the city’s key infrastructure projects for the 2021-2025 period, aimed at urban renovation and development.

He said the project plays an essential role in completing Hanoi’s core transport network, connecting the northern Red River area with the downtown, contributing to the completion of Ring Road 3.5, and easing congestion on Ring Road 3.

Tuan added that the series of groundbreaking projects reflects Hanoi’s determination to accelerate infrastructure development, enhance the city’s appearance and improve residents’ quality of life.

He called on the public to support the project to ensure its timely completion and contribute to the city’s socio-economic progress.

Since October 4, Hanoi has launched several major projects to mark the 71st anniversary of its Liberation Day, including an opera house worth VND12.7 trillion ($484 million), the Le Hong Phong Politics School worth VND980 billion ($37 million), and an underpass at the Co Linh–Dam Quang Trung intersection worth VND750 billion ($28.5 million).
